What Can Teeth Whitening Treat? Intrinsic VS. Extrinsic Stains
Teeth whitening isn't a cure-all for every type of stain. Some stains are resistant to teeth whitening and can benefit from other forms of dentistry, such as veneers or dental crowns, to conceal the discoloration. There are two types of stains:
Intrinsic stains form from within the teeth, often by factors you can't control, such as dental trauma, medical conditions, and genetics. These stains are resistant to teeth whitening since they are internal.
Extrinsic stains are on the outside enamel layer of your tooth. These are caused by factors you can control, like what you eat and drink. Extrinsic stains are what respond well to teeth whitening measures.

Several factors can cause intrinsic and extrinsic stains to appear on your teeth. One or several of the following factors may contribute to your discoloration:
Dark Beverages and Foods
Dark beverages, like coffee, tea, and red wine, as well as pigmented foods, like beets, curries, and blueberries, can leave your teeth extrinsically stained. Drink through a straw and rinse with water after drinking or eating these products.
Tobacco Products
Smoking or chewing tobacco can cause discoloration in your teeth from nicotine and tar commonly found in these products.
Age

Genetics
