Dental Crowns

Dental crowns (also known as caps) can repair a single damaged tooth or several compromised teeth.

Our Redlands, CA, dentists provide crowns that not only restore function and health, but look indistinguishable from natural teeth.

If you need a dental crown, Redlands Family Dentistry has state-of-the-art technology that allows us to create and place these restorations in just one appointment.

Dental Emergency? Call Us Now for Quick Treatment

Do you need urgent dental care to address tooth damage or pain? One of our dentists is always on call for emergencies involving your teeth or gums. Receiving timely care can prevent problems from becoming worse, and help keep your smile beautiful and healthy.

Stunning Same-Day Tooth Restorations

Dental crowns are tooth-shaped caps placed over a tooth that has suffered trauma or been treated for extensive decay. They can also be paired with dental implants to replace a lost tooth.

Traditionally, crowns require two office visits over the span of about two weeks. We're able to offer same-day crowns thanks to CEREC®, a cutting-edge system for the design and creation of porcelain dental prosthetics that are virtually identical to natural teeth. CEREC technology offers the opportunity for a high degree of customization, ensuring your new crown will look and feel just like your natural teeth.

Your dentist will take a 3D digital impression of your teeth and gums using an oral scanner that captures thousands of images in just seconds. These images will be processed with our CAD (computer-aided design) technology, which will use them to create a blueprint for your dental crown. This blueprint will be transferred to our modern milling machine, which can fabricate a restoration from a block of high-grade dental porcelain in a matter of minutes. You won't need to bother with temporary crowns before enjoying your repaired tooth or teeth.

Dental Crowns Have Many Uses

You can receive a dental crown to treat a tooth that is:

Damaged

Teeth that are weakened by chips, cracks, or decay often require protection from additional harm. A dental crown fits securely over a compromised tooth to improve function and greatly decrease the risk of further damage.

Missing

Replacing a missing natural tooth with a dental implant and crown offers unparalleled stability for your bite. We can place dental implants at our Redlands office and fit them with custom dental crowns after a four- to six-month healing period. You'll be able to wear a natural-looking temporary crown in the meantime. We can also replace a missing tooth with a dental bridge. Your bridge will be composed of an artificial tooth, called a pontic, and two dental crowns that cap the natural teeth on either side. Our CEREC system can create a gorgeous dental bridge with a highly precise fit.

Cosmetically Flawed

Crowns are commonly used to conceal aesthetic dental flaws, like small gaps between the teeth, minor issues with tooth shape or size, or deep-set staining. You can receive just one crown or an entire set to dramatically transform your smile and boost your confidence in your appearance. The porcelain will be finished to look just like your natural teeth.

Undergoing a Root Canal

If an infection has reached the inner part of your tooth, root canal therapy is the best way to restore your health and end your dental pain without extraction. Contrary to popular belief, modern techniques and technology have made this procedure quick and virtually painless. After your dentist eliminates the infection, they'll seal the inner chamber of the tooth and fit it with a protective dental crown for added strength and stability.

A Great Review From a Local Professional

"I chose Dr. Hoffer as my dentist because he does exceptional dentistry.  He does not just provide a service to his patients, he cares for his patients like family. The professionalism and friendliness of his whole team is outstanding.  Today while I was getting a crown done, there was a cancelation on the schedule. I was asked if I wanted to get my teeth cleaned while I waited a few minutes while the crown was being made, and the convenience was so appreciated." Dr. Randall Hoff, 2022

The Very Best Materials for the Very Best Results

Not all dental crowns are equal in quality. We want your crown to provide excellent function and maintain a gorgeous appearance for many years to come, so we use only the top dental materials to create restorations that look like natural teeth.

You can choose an IPS e.max®, IPS Empress®, zirconia, or porcelain crown. All of these materials are incredibly durable and can be color-matched to your natural teeth. After treatment, many patients say they have trouble telling the difference between their restoration and the real thing.

Looking for That Hand-Finished Touch? We Work With a Prestigious Dental Lab

For patients who want a crown made of a premium material other than porcelain, we also offer traditional crowns crafted in a laboratory. If you choose this option for treatment, your digital impressions will be sent to a dental laboratory that partners with Redlands Family Dentistry. We stand behind the outstanding quality of their work, and patients are often amazed by their final results. Trained technicians will craft your crown with the highest degree of expertise and precision, and you'll receive your finished product in just a few weeks.

The Dental Crown Timeline

Initial Consultation

Visit our Redlands, CA, office so your dentist can conduct a thorough examination of your teeth and determine if crowns are the right treatment for you. We might also recommend preparatory dental work, like a root canal or periodontal cleaning, at this step.

Shaping the Teeth

Your dentist will reshape the natural tooth structure to create a solid foundation for your dental crown. This process is gentle and can typically be completed with just local anesthesia.

Digital Impressions

We'll use a digital oral scanner to capture precise images of your teeth, gums, and the surrounding structures without the added time and mess of traditional dental putty.

Designing the Crown

Your dentist will use your scans to design a digital model of your new permanent crown. If you choose a lab-created crown, we'll send your scans and model to our partner lab and fit you with a comfortable temporary crown while you wait. If you're going to receive several crowns at once, we can create a wax-up model to show you how your restorations will look alongside your natural teeth.

Crown Fabrication

Our CEREC milling machine will use your digital model to shape your e.max, Empress, zirconia, or porcelain crown from a small block of dental ceramic. It takes only a few minutes to create a permanent crown that's an exact replica of your optimized model. If you instead choose a traditional crown milled at our partner lab, it will be carefully checked by their technicians for accuracy.

Placing the Crown

Your permanent crown will be secured to your tooth with medical-grade cement. (A special dam will be used to make sure the cement only contacts your tooth and the crown it will support.) Your dentist will check that your crown fits comfortably and looks indistinguishable from the rest of your smile. If your dental crown needs an adjustment, we can quickly fine-tune the model and create a new restoration in our in-house dental lab.

Answers to Frequently Asked Questions About Dental Crowns

Does insurance cover dental crowns?

Most basic dental insurance plans will cover at least a portion of the cost of your dental crown if it is medically necessary. If you are interested in dental crowns in Redlands, we work with most insurance providers. Our staff will be glad to speak directly to your insurance provider to help you secure the best possible coverage.

How long do dental crowns last?

Crowns from our Redlands practice can last as long as 15 years with proper care. Brushing and flossing daily, visiting your dentist for a checkup every six months, and being careful not to use your crown to bite or chew especially hard or sticky foods can all help prolong the life of your crown.

How long does it take to get a dental crown?

If you need a crown, you can get it in just one visit to our dental office in Redlands. Crowns can be crafted right away using our CEREC technology. Or, if you want a crown made of premium material requiring us to work with our offsite lab, we can provide a temporary crown right away so you can experience restored comfort and function until your permanent crown is ready to be cemented into place.
Making your time with us a positive experience is our number-one priority. Our team is here to make sure you're treated like family from the moment you first walk through our door.
